Frequently Asked Questions

How does online tutoring work?

Show +

During an online tutoring session, we will meet on a program called Zoom. You can download it to your computer and/or your mobile device, so it is very easy to use anywhere. With Zoom, we will be able to see and hear each other clearly. We will also use an online whiteboard so that we can write, and we will have the ability to upload documents and share screens with each other.

What equipment do I need for online tutoring?

Show +

Students need only a high speed internet connection and a tablet or computer with webcam. Most computers have a built-in webcam, but if yours does not, I recommend picking up this one. If your student prefers to use the online whiteboard (as opposed to paper), I suggest that s/he use a tablet like this one to make it easier.

I also recommend that students use a headset during online tutoring sessions. It will help reduce background noise, which will help the student focus and also allow us to hear each other better. Any standard headset like this one will work.

What subjects do you tutor?

Show +

I have taught and tutored a variety of academic subjects. Two of my favorites are math and executive functioning skills. I also love to help students on their journey to college, so I enthusiastically provide SAT and ACT prep as well.

What is your availability?

Show +

In general, I am available Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm-10:30 pm CST. You can check my online calendar here to see if there is a time available that works for you. If not, feel free to text me at (314) 749-5429 and I will do my best to accommodate you.

How often should my child or I have tutoring sessions?

Show +

How frequently a student has tutoring sessions depends on the individual student's needs and goals. All students learn differently and work at different paces. As a general guideline though, for students who are struggling in a class, need to fill in some gaps from an extended absence or change of school, or who need help getting organized and developing executive functioning skills,  two 45 minute sessions per week is often ideal.

For students who are interested in skill building and/or are already doing well and are looking to explore beyond the classroom, one 45 minute session per week usually works well.

Sessions are also available on an as needed basis.

There are, of course, circumstances that necessitate more or fewer tutoring sessions, and we will discuss your student's personal needs during our consultation. Schedule your complimentary strategy session HERE.

How does scheduling work?

Show +

Most students meet regularly at the same time(s) each week. Your regular time is something that we will discuss in our strategy session.

In order to make scheduling as easy as possible (even for last minute help) and eliminate unnecessary email/phone tag, I have enlisted the help of an online scheduling system. You can access it any time and book the slot that works best for you.

My child just got home and is feeling concerned about tomorrow's test. Is there any chance we can schedule a session for today?

Show +

Quite possibly. I am happy to accommodate last minute requests whenever possible. Please check my calendar for availability. If you do not see a time that works for you, please text me at (314) 749-5429 and I'll do my best to get your child the help s/he needs today.

What are your rates?

Show +

My tutoring rate varies, depending on the subject matter and grade level of the student.

Please note that working with me is not the same as working with a huge tutoring company. With me, you have the same experienced teacher/tutor (19 years) every time and I get to know my students and their learning styles very well. As a result, I can quickly assess the most effective and efficient ways to help your child with the subject matter.

Consequently, I can help my students get results quickly. After working with me, my students typically see an increase of two letter grades, 4 ACT points, or 150 SAT points. Plus, they have a newfound confidence that takes them from feeling like they don't know where to start to being sure they can figure it out.

How do I pay for tutoring sessions?

Show +

For regular students: You will be billed monthly by the 5th of the month. Adjustments will be made for any tutoring sessions missed (according to the cancellation policy) or added by prorating the following month.

For as needed sessions: Payment is required at the time of scheduling.

All payments will be accepted online. You may pay by card, PayPal, or EFT.

What is your cancellation policy?

Show +

Tutoring is an important commitment for both the tutor and the student. Once an appointment has been made, I set aside time on my schedule and spend time preparing for the upcoming session. Should the need for a cancellation arise, please send a text message to me at (314) 749-5429 at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged the session fee. Sessions canceled with fewer than 24 hours notice must be paid in full.
